Review: Guisados

It sounds hard to believe but, finding authentic quality Mexican food in Los Angeles can be quite the challenge. The irony is not lost on me. Los Angeles is the second most populated city by Mexicans in the entire world (only second to Mexico City). Here we can find many attempts at offering true Mexican cuisine but surprisingly few make the cut. So, it was a pleasure to find a place like Guisados. This restaurant has figured out how to satisfy the high standards of true Mexican cooking with a small and specialized menu consisting of different braised meats and vegetables on hand made tortillas.

Unfortunately, so many restaurants succumb to American influences and prejudices. And those who try to remain faithful to Mexican gastronomy can some times fall short of that authentic flavor. It could be the quality of ingredients found here or maybe some other reason for so many to fall under a category I call "not quite there." This is why Guisados is so interesting. They offer some very real, very Mexican food. The best way to get to know they're menu is to try their Taco Sampler. You get an assortment of six small tacos that will leave you quite satisfied.

Guisados was opened in 2010 in a neighborhood of East Los Angeles known as Boyle Heights. Currently, Guisados has two more locations: one in Echo Park and another in downtown Los Angeles. Aside from its apt decision to keep their menu specialized, they have also established a good relationship with the local art scene. In 2011 they started a project to promote local artists by displaying their work on the interior walls of their restaurants making them also function as art galleries. Now, when restaurant patrons go to satisfy their food cravings, they also have the privilege of looking around at the local art decorating the restaurant.

So... Anyone hungry yet?
